The Origin of Alabama's Roll Tide Mantra

If you've ever been around an Alabama football fan, you have almost certainly heard the phrase "Roll Tide". The Crimson Tide have been shouting it during football games for years, and you can't walk through the University of Alabama campus without seeing somebody wearing a Roll Tide shirt or hat. You may find yourself wondering what "Roll Tide" means, where it came from, and why people say it so much. We're here to help clear that up a bit.

To figure out what "Roll Tide" means, we have to start all the way back at the 1907 Auburn-Alabama game, when the term "Crimson Tide" first started to be used in reference to Alabama's football team. This is generally credited to former Birmingham Age-Herald sports editor Hugh Roberts. According to the University of Alabama Traditions Webpage, Alabama gained the name because of the foul weather conditions during the game. Apparently the mud on the field had a distinct crimson color, and the players became covered in mud, thus earning the name "Crimson Tide."

That game also happened to be the last time that Alabama played Auburn until 1948, when the rivalry resumed and fans reported that the Alabama football team "rolled" onto the field, thus beginning what has become the "Roll Tide" rally chant. Since then, there have been a few variations of the phrase, including "Roll Tide Roll", shortened to "RTR".  This phrase won't be going anywhere anytime soon, especially now that Alabama has won the 2015 National Championship.

The Vault is fully stocked on University of Alabama clothing, including Roll Tide shirts and hats. Check out our selection by clicking the link below!

It's Official: The Rams Are Moving Back To LA

As of the 2016 NFL season, the St. Louis Rams are relocating back to their old home of Los Angeles. They first moved to St. Louis after the 1994 season, and spent 20 years there before being forced to move back. There were lots of financial problems for the team in St. Louis, mostly centered around the Edward Jones Dome, which was supposed to be renovated in 2005 order to meet certain qualifications but never was. This caused the team to be fined over $2 million that was paid by the city of St. Louis, who subsequently told them that they could no longer support the team.

The future Los Angeles Rams home games will be played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum until their new Stadium is completed, which should be in 2019. Although many St. Louis fans are disappointed to lose their team, LA sports fans are generally overjoyed to get their NFL team back after twenty long years of absence.

Does anybody remember the old LA Rams theme song: "Ram It"? If you want to laugh, check it out on Youtube above. It would be hilarious to see the Rams do a re-make of this song now that they are back in LA, but even if they don't we can enjoy this classic tune that's so 80s it hurts. Come to think of it, maybe they should just keep this one in the past.

The LA Rams uniforms, however, were pretty cool and we would love to see the current gold phased out in favor of that old bright yellow. We've found some old photos of the LA Rams in the NFL archives, and included them below for your viewing pleasure:

Alabama Crimson Tide Wins The 2015 National Championship

As expected, we saw a great game last week in Glendale. The Tigers and the Tide faced off in a long and grueling National Championship game, and although it was close until the very end, Alabama came out on top, with a final score of 45-40. We want to commend both teams on their superior display of sportsmanship, and congratulate the Crimson Tide on winning their 16th National Championship. Most notably, the show of respect between Watson and Henry after the game. These guys will be seeing each other in the NFL for sure.

Not surprisingly, we saw some incredible gameplay from both Derrick Henry and Deshaun Watson. Watson threw for 405 yards, and ran for another 73, giving him a whopping total of 478 yards on offense. That is seriously impressive, especially considering the powerhouse that is the Alabama defense. Henry's performance was no less impressive, running for 158 yards and scoring three touchdowns, and efficiently shattering the Shaun Alexander's Alabama football rushing record.

Clemson will be back, though. Dabo Swinney is doing big things with that team, and Deshaun Watson has only just finished his sophomore year. That means he's still got at least one good season left before he goes off to the NFL, maybe even two seasons. The Clemson Tigers will be going into the 2016 season fresh off a great year, and ready to bring out even more guts.

But for now, a big congratulations to Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team on winning the 2015 National Championship!

National Championship Preview - Clemson vs. Alabama

Clemson vs. Bama National Championship

With Clemson's victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl and Alabama's domination over Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl, we're looking at a Clemson vs. Alabama National Championship Game. The game will take place at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ on Monday, January 11th, 2016 at 8:30pm. We couldn't be more excited for this match up.

Both teams have had great seasons, with Clemson going in undefeated and Alabama's only loss being Ole Miss early in the season. Coincidentally, Alabama's loss to Ole Miss also happened to be the one game when Jake Coker did not start at Quarterback. The Tide bounced back from the early season loss and won all of their remaining games, including a very convincing 38-0 win against Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl.

We're looking forward to seeing some great play from star players like Clemson QB Deshaun Watson and Alabama RB and Heisman Trophy Winner Derrick Henry. It'll be interesting to see how the Alabama defense does against Watson, as he has proven himself able to excel under a variety of circumstances, although he has not yet faced a defensive line as tough as that Alabama front seven. The run game that worked so well for them against Oklahoma might not stand a chance against the Crimson Tide, and with WR Deon Cain suspended, Clemson might have some trouble on offense.

Most professionals have Alabama favored to win this game simply because their team has been playing at a level that is far above most other teams in college football, but this year's Clemson team under Dabo Swinney has shown some serious heart in big games against teams like Notre Dame and Florida State. If the Tigers can "Bring Their Own Guts", they may actually have a chance to defeat Nick Saban and the rest of Alabama Crimson Tide. Either way, we're going to see an awesome game on Monday night.

Even if Alabama does win, it's doubtful that they will blow out Clemson in the same way that they defeated Michigan State. We're predicting a close one right up until the very end, and if Clemson wins we'll be ready to Party Like It's 1981!
